Were you here in ’24? Congratulations, you helped make the 28th annual Sprints the Queensland Event of the Year at the annual Motorsport Australia State awards.
Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the 1949 Leyburn Australian Grand Prix, last year’s Historic Leyburn Sprints were the most successful on record. Around 18,000 people attended across the weekend to see 230 cars on track, feature display cars including some original 1949 grand prix entries and meet former Australian Grand Prix drivers Warwick Brown, Bruce Allison, John Bowe did he race in an AGP? and Charlie O’Brien, plus pit-lane personalities Ron Harrop and Brian Gelding. Queensland Icon Dick Johnson made his regular annual appearance to the delight of his many fans.
Sprints President Tricia Chant thanked everyone who attended in any guise: “The 2024 Queensland State Event of the Year award is a huge thrill for everyone involved with the Historic Leyburn Sprints. We’re one big family – the volunteer community organisers, Motorsport Australia officials, the competitors and the loyal spectators and supporters who all return every August for a wonderful celebration of grassroots motorsport.”
Leyburn is believed to be Queensland’s biggest annual motorsport event after the Supercar rounds at Townsville and the Gold Coast. It also won the Queensland Motorsport Event of the Year award in 2017.
