Twelve women who aspire to become officials at motorsport events will have their first experience of potential roles in a program to be launched at the Historic Leyburn Sprints this weekend.
The women, aged between 14 and 49, will observe Motorsport Australia-licensed officials at work in course marshalling, track inspection, vehicle scrutineering, timekeeping, flag marshalling, starting, stewarding and event secretaryship.
The opportunity has been created under the Queensland’s Government’s $15 million Active Women and Girls Program, with funding for resources being provided to the Sprints organisers. It aims to boost sport and active recreation opportunities for women and girls in Queensland.
At Leyburn, the program is being overseen by Sprints President Tricia Chant and the event’s experienced senior officials.
“Especially because of the safety requirements, motorsport events would not run without trained and licensed officials – they are simply essential and are needed everywhere, at all levels,” Mrs Chant said.
“We’ll give the candidates this weekend a great taste of the many exciting and important opportunities that are available to them – and the same opportunities are available to women as they are to male officials.
“If they’re interested in taking it further, we will support them through the pathway for Motorsport Australia official licences. We’ll provide guidance and mentoring, plus some assistance with expenses.
