A New Spot to Spectate and Refresh

August 01,  2024

There’s a new venue to enjoy a cold drink at the Historic Leyburn Sprints this year, the Golden Fleece Bar, on the outside of Turn One.

It’s in a prime spot, providing views of the cars from the start line, through turn one, along Canning Street and into Turn Two. It also faces our video super-screen, which will show live-streamed vision of the track action all weekend.

The Golden Fleece Bar is new – but not new.

It’s on the site of the former Golden Fleece Hotel, which burned down on 24 September 1912. The Golden Fleece had been one of several pubs that were built in Leyburn during a goldrush in the early 1860s.

During preparation of the new site undertaken by Tait Farming, Collins Hay, the Reid family and a committed band of volunteers, some bricks from the old pub were unearthed and have been preserved as part of the town’s history.
